Among various official occasions which require professional interpretation is a marriage ceremony. It is an event bringing joy both to the couple-to-be-married and their guests, thus a moment to be cherished. For that reason, an interpreter should be well prepared for their role so that everything goes smoothly.
It is always advisable before the ceremony to re-read the civil oath. Though it remains the same, with so many other things to remember, it is better to be on the safe side. Then, ensure you know how to pronounce the name of a foreigner* to be joined by marriage bond. It is about respect and acceptance of someone else’s origin via their language (including the system of sounds). Sometimes also witnesses’ names are mentioned, and to avoid any mistake (e.g. in the case of two first names or a two-part surname) it is a good idea to summarise: “the witnesses, as stated before/in this deed”. Interpretation is also about making quick, smart decisions.
I always remember I am a kind of actor speaking to a group of people and trying to engage them in a kind of theatre. When there are really many participants in the ceremony, I use a tip from a business etiquette course – looking over people’s eyes as if with a sweeping movement. That gives the impression that the speaker encompasses each member of the audience. Further, I try to achieve in a room a proper voice emission – a resultant of good breathing, resonance and articulation – as this again helps engage the people in the course of the ceremony and adds on to the professional image of the interpreter.
The closing minutes: expect unexpected. The official will extend wishes to the newly married and thank their guests for participation. However, sometimes they would go on a poetic flow and I think then it is better to stick to a down-to-earth language in interpretation as my impromptu most probably would not equal the original. If the official thanks the interpreter, I usually depart from my role of a faithful interpreter and speak in the name of both of us to be able to express gratitude for the invitation also in the name of the official.
*And I, in turn, have a foreign name for them. Last year, I was an interpreter for a Lebanon bride and then for an Egyptian bridegroom. In both cases I was told my first name was just beautiful. It turned out that besides its Latin origin “Renata” means “a pleasant melody” in Arabic.
